The Job gap between dog groomers and children educators

The gender gap is still wide open. Women still do more house work. These are all well-known facts we are trying to change. But there is even more. Did you know that one in five working women with dependent children has to work without any paid leave? More than 40% of women work in part time jobs with very insecure work conditions. Men working in insecure part time jobs is just 15%.

Even though they work as much as men, women still do more house work than men (2 hours and 50 minutes versus just over an hour and a half). They also have the lion’s share in childcare, too –  on average they spend three times more time on childcare than men.

The international women’s day is used by many organizations to raise the awareness to the big difference in the wages and the time dedicated to housework and childcare.

We need to speak about the disadvantages and the ongoing problems we face to be able to make a meaningful change.

The thing is that by the time women retire they have even bigger financial disadvantage. In Australia for example men have accumulated balance of $322,000 while women at the same age have only $180,000.

The wage gap between industries, required education versus the wage receive is shocking. Dog groomers receive better wages than women in education. While dog grooming requires a short course and little experience on the job, education has stricter requirements – minimum BSc with 4 years education and longer experience with children. However, children educations receive lower salaries than dog groomers. They are also paid lower than financial planners and aviation mechanics, as well as woodworkers.

In this case we should not be surprised that many women choose to work in the beauty and grooming industry and choose not to pursue a career in education.

However, the families alone cannot afford to pay for the increase of the childcare and education costs which means that it is the government’s responsibility to cover the increase.

Searching for solutions: one of the ways to bridge the wage gap is to find jobs in high demand and that offer good pay, such as taking dog grooming courses or training new hairstylists to hem them out of poverty.

The gender gap solution is a change in the laws for women and a new attitude for men

At the beginning of 2018, the #MeToo movement is gaining momentum, and women have become more confident in speaking up about their rights for equal pay and against sexual harassment or other frustrating discrimination by employers and other colleagues at the workplace.

In order for the gender gap to be closed at workplaces, a number of laws need to be rewritten, and what is more important – men need to adopt new overall attitudes towards female members of their staff.

According to a report from the Organization of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) regarding gender equality issues, about two thirds of all member countries have already introduced new legislative changes and policies for resolving equal pay issues, and even more have started implementing paternity leave options. Overall though, the news is not so good. Statistics from the countries in the OECD show that the average female worker is still paid 15% less than males working at the same job position.

The report includes suggestions for ways in which the governments, the legal systems, the educational institutions and the private businesses can work towards resolving the persistent gap in gender employment. It also suggests pursuing more ways of stimulating girls to enter STEM careers as well as more boys entering jobs which are care related.

The OECD also asked that its 35 member countries come up with three best and most effective ways to deal with the barriers existing to female employment. Here is what is already being done:

  • The subsidies or benefits or rebates for public childcare have been increased in various countries including: Japan, Korea, Canada, New Zealand, Poland and Slovakia.
  • Free childcare was introduced in the UK and Norway.
  • Compulsory quotas for employment of females at private enterprises have been introduced in Austria, Germany, France, Belgium, Italy, Iceland, Norway and Israel.
  • Requirements for detailed disclosure regarding gender pay differences have been implemented in Japan, Germany, Australia, Switzerland, Sweden, Lithuania and the UK.

As for the requirement by the OECD for the member countries to provide means of encouraging more men entering care-taking roles and jobs, the actions proposed are quite different, including:

  • 31 countries suggest measures for changing the attitudes of boys and men
  • 20 countries have proposed letting men take time off work for child care
  • 13 countries want to implement actions for better childcare.

So, the overall conclusion from this report and step towards resolving the standing problem with gender gaps in employment by the OECD is that women need new laws to be implemented and an overall attitude change for men is required in order for these inequalities to be resolved.

The good news is that many of the member countries are giving shared child caregiving a top priority, and already 10 countries are offering financial incentives to encourage more fathers to take parental leaves for at least a couple of months.

According to the member countries, the most urgent issues regarding gender inequalities are: violence against women, unequal payment of women and last but not least unequal sharing of care giving and household tasks. Let us see how they will act upon these worrying issues from now on!

Plus, showing initiative and true interest is a plus as well. While this method may not always have positive results, it doesn’t hurt to try, right?

  1. Choose specific keywords from the job description in your CV

Make sure you personalize your CV for the specific position you are applying. Adding more of the keywords included in the job description as part of your previous experience and your personal information will increase the chances of your CV catching the attention of the employers who usually use an applicant tracking system at the initial stages of their hiring process.

  1. Don’t be afraid to be different

Unwind your imagination and create a unique CV which will help you stand out and hopefully grab the attention of the people who receive it. Use a non-standard form or add a small and yet special touch to your CV so that you leave a lasting and positive impression on your potential employers.

  1. Don’t let the important stuff get lost in the details

Don’t overdo it when it comes to designing the format of your CV. In many cases – less is more. Don’t use fonts which are difficult to read. Make it intuitive and readable by adding the relevant information in chronological order and located in separate sectors which are easy to locate.

  1. Don’t be shy – show off

Show off your skills by adding examples of your work, your portfolio, a link to your blog or any other relevant information which will help the employers see and hopefully appreciate just how good you are at what you do!
